Before you leave home...

  • Sort loads by material type
  • Remove all fluids from gas-powered equipment
  • Empty oil drums and tanks and cut in half
  • Secure open loads with tarp or rope
  • Arrange for additional assistance to help unload heavy material

For health and safety reasons, Container Station Attendants are not permitted to assist customers with the unloading of materials.

Household Hazardous Waste Depot

  • Safely dispose of household hazardous waste free of charge at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot, located at the Halton Waste Management Site
  • 20 litre and 8 fluorescent tube/bulb maximum limit per visit
  • Commercial loads not accepted
  • Drop-off materials in their original container (not returnable) and securely close with a lid. Materials can also be dropped off a closed container, labeled with information about the contents
  • Do not place hazardous waste at the curb, it will not be collected
  • Do not place hazardous waste in garbage or down the drain or storm sewer


  • Materials must remain in a clearly marked, sealed container
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not mix materials together
  • Empty, dry metal paint cans, with lids removed, can be placed in the Blue Box

Acceptable Household Hazardous Waste materials

  • Acids, solvents, glues
  • Paints and stains (full or partially full)
  • Aerosols(full or partially full)
  • Pesticides, garden chemicals, fertilizers
  • Automotive liquids, oil filters
  • Sharps(must be in a sealed container)
  • Batteries
  • Mercury-containing devices
  • Pressurized cylinders less than 20lbs
  • Fluorescent lights, CFL bulbs (8 maxiumum per visit)
  • Personal care products
  • Medications (prescription and over-the-counter)
  • Household cleaners, bleach, pool chemicals
  • Waste cooking oil

Orange Box for Household Hazardous Waste

The orange box provides a safe place to store old, used, or unwanted household hazardous waste until it can be dropped off to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot, a Special Waste Drop-off Day, or an alternative disposal location. Residents can pick up one Orange Box per household, free of charge, from the Halton Waste Management Site. Material dropped off without an orange box will still be accepted. Note: There is no curbside collection for the Orange Box.

Paint & Stain Reuse Depot

  • Located beside the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at the Halton Waste Management Site
  • Pick up and drop off usable paint and stain, free of charge
  • Open from spring to fall
  • The Paint and Stain Reuse Depot is now open for the season!

Reuse Depot

Halton residents can drop off items that are in good condition and fit for resale at the Reuse Depot, located within the Halton Waste Management site, free of charge.  Donating all clothing, textiles, and household items helps support life altering services and programs to the residents of Halton Region.

Acceptable Materials

  • All textiles, regardless of condition
  • Clothing, shoes, linens, accessories, belts and purses
  • Antiques
  • Books (hardcover and paperback)
  • Electronics (TV's, stereos, computers)
  • Furniture - clean and undamaged
  • Housewares (lamps, kitchen equipment, dishes, area rugs)
  • Barbecues without propane tanks
  • Air conditioners
  • Stuffed toys

Unacceptable Materials

  • Large appliances or lawn mowers
  • Wall to wall rugs/carpets
  • Used mattresses and box springs and sofa beds
  • Sofa beds
  • Typewriters
  • Tires and auto parts
  • Hazardous materials (paint, cleaners, etc.)
  • Plastic or wood blinds
  • Infant equipment (cribs, strollers, car seats)
  • Pianos

In Halton Region, there are 2 waste transfer stations for garbage only. Please contact for details about accepted materials and fees.

Special Waste Drop-off Days

Throughout the year, Halton Region organizes Special Waste Drop-off Days for the convenience of local residents. Visit one of these locations near you to easily recycle and safely dispose of household hazardous waste.

Alternative single-use and rechargeable battery locations. Drop off household batteries and your old cell phones here.

Other Battery Drop-off Locations

Many retailers take back household single-use batteries for recycling through the Orange Drop Program run by Stewardship Ontario. Visit (external link) for acceptable materials and to find a drop-off location near you.
