An interview is an employer's opportunity to assess your suitability for a position. Learn about behavioural-type interview questions and helpful tips for a successful interview.

Behavioural-Type Interview Questions

Behavioural-type interview questions are often asked during the interview process at Halton Region. This type of question is an open-ended question that invites you to draw on your past experience.

Commonly asked behavioural-type questions are:

  • Can you tell me about a time when you disagreed with a supervisor's recommendation?
  • Can you describe a situation that shows how you deal with conflict among co-workers?
  • Tell me about a time when you had to act quickly, with very little planning.

To answer these questions thoroughly, you should:

  1. Explain the situation.
  2. Describe how you handled the situation.
  3. Describe the outcome of your actions.

Interview Tips

  • Prepare yourself. Ask yourself - Why do I want this job? What do I have to offer?
  • Practice responses to common behavioural-type questions.
  • Review experiences you have had at work, in school, and in volunteer activities. Keep a mental list of your accomplishments.
  • Be on time for your interview.
  • Wear appropriate clothing to the interview (dress conservatively and avoid heavy colognes).
  • Make a good impression. Project enthusiasm, interest and motivation to learn. Smile and be positive.
  • Do not criticize your past employers or co-workers.
  • Research the position and the organization before the interview. This will help you highlight the ways you will be an asset to the employer.
  • Prepare questions to ask the panel at the end of the interview. This shows that you are interested in the organization and that you are willing to do a bit of research. You might consider asking:
    • how various departments function together
    • how employees are trained
    • what challenges the organization faces
  • Ask the interviewer when the hiring decision will be made, and how they will inform candidates.
  • Be sure to bring the following items to your interview:
    • copies of your resume
    • reference letters and/or
    • list of references
  • Be yourself! Your responses will feel and sound more natural.
