Regional Chair Gary Carr: Flood Response & Recovery

Jul 24, 2024

My thoughts are with everyone impacted by the flooding last week in our community. I know that this is a difficult time. Our Public Works team is here to support you through recovery and as you take steps to prevent future basement flooding.

As a reminder, if you experienced flooding, please call Halton Region at 311 or email accesshalton@halton.ca, regardless of the source. All calls will be returned and our staff will follow up with you directly. Also, remember to take photos and contact your insurance before you start your cleanup.

Flood Recovery Support

Enhanced garbage and bulk waste pick up continues this week and next week for households that have reported flooding to 311. Information about the service is being provided by phone, email, and hand-delivered mail to these households.

We continue to offer our Ex-gratia grant to help with flood-related costs. To be eligible for a grant, there must be confirmed flooding inside a home resulting from a sewer surcharge or a blockage that occurred on the municipal side of the wastewater system. Residents must call 311 to report basement flooding. Halton Region Public Works staff will investigate and you will be informed of grant qualifications and next steps.

Flood Prevention Support

Our Basement Flooding Prevention Program helps you make home improvements that can reduce the risk of flooding from sewer backup. The program provides subsidies and access to qualified, licensed contractors, making it easier and more affordable to get necessary prevention work completed.

Apply today to get help with the cost of:

  1. Downspout Disconnection: 100 per cent of all eligible costs to disconnect your downspouts from the weeping tile, up to a maximum of $500.
  2. Weeping Tile Disconnection and Sump Pump Installation: 100 per cent of the combined eligible costs to disconnect weeping tiles and install a sump pump, up to a maximum of $5,000.
  3. Backwater Valve Installation: 50 per cent of the eligible costs to install a backwater valve inside your home, up to a maximum of $675.
  4. Sewer Lateral (pipe) Lining and Repair: 50 per cent of the eligible costs to repair or line your sewer lateral (pipe), up to a maximum of $2,000.
