Cover of the 2023 State of Housing Report

The 2023 State of Housing Report (PDF file) is now available! This report provides a snapshot of the housing market in Halton including information on the availability and affordability of housing in the region. It covers all aspects of the housing market from private ownership to the vital supports we provide through assisted and supportive housing. Housing is a key priority for our community and the information in this report demonstrates the progress being made to build more housing in the community. In 2023:

  • 3,743 new housing units were completed – an increase from 2022.
  • 10,911 new housing units were in development — an increase from 2022.
  • 74.6 per cent of new housing units were townhouses or multi-storey apartments that provide the best opportunity to add more affordable housing to the open housing market, above our target of 65 per cent for 2023.

Assisted and supportive housing projects in Halton

As part of our Comprehensive Housing Strategy, we are building new assisted and supportive housing units on lands owned by Halton Region. With construction underway and additional projects in various stages of pre-development and our strong commitment to deliver housing-enabling infrastructure, we are ready to deliver more assisted housing to increase housing supply. We are an active partner with all levels of government to support building more homes faster.

Since 2014, we have created 1,118 new assisted housing opportunities exceeding our target of 900 new government-funded housing opportunities. We’ve also identified potential locations where we can build 600 new rental and assisted-living housing units and invested heavily to ensure these projects are shovel-ready. These new units will provide secure, affordable shelter, and health and wellness support services. I’d like to highlight two ongoing projects in our community:

265 Kerr Street, Oakville

This new building will provide 52 assisted housing rental apartments, with 22 units for supportive housing, for older adults on the Halton Access to Community Housing waitlist. Future residents will enjoy a Community Wellness Hub (external link) for support and connections to local health and wellness services. This building will also set a standard for energy efficient building design and the use of sustainable resources.

1258 Rebecca Street, Oakville

This project will provide 14 semi-detached, one-bedroom, energy efficient bungalows for supportive and assisted housing for seniors from the Halton Access to Community Housing waitlist.
