Regional Chair Gary Carr: Talking about mental health

Bell Let’s Talk Day is taking place on January 24, 2024. This day shines a light on how we can take action to improve mental health in our lives and the lives of others.

By the time Canadians reach 40 years of age, approximately half of them have experienced mental illness. I encourage you to challenge the stigma and join the conversation. We can make a difference by discussing mental health and well-being with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues. Let’s create real change in mental health. If you or someone you know would like support, please use the resources listed below.

Resources available in Halton

For information on taking care of your mental health in Halton, our Mental Health webpage has resources for people of all ages and life stages. You can also visit the HRPS Mental Health Support page (external link) or the Province’s Mental Health Support page (external link).

If you or someone you know needs support in a crisis, the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Halton Crisis Outreach and Support Team (COAST) Crisis Line (external link) is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 1-877-825-9011. For children, the Reach Out Centre for Kids (ROCK) (external link) is available 24/7 by phone at 905-878-9785.

The Halton Region branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (external link) also provides free telephone counselling. Call 289-291-5396 to access supports.

Remember: a mental health emergency is a medical emergency. If you need help, please reach out to a loved one or health professional as soon as possible. Please also continue to check in on friends and family, especially those who may be struggling.
