In 2021, there were 3.4 million square feet of industrial space and more than 172,847 square feet of commercial space approved for construction. This allowed for a building permit construction value for employment areas (industrial and commercial) of nearly $584 million, which is significantly more than the five-year combined average for industrial and commercial developments.

The total value of building permit construction across the GTHA totaled $28.5 billion in 2021. At eight per cent, Halton’s share of total development remains relatively modest. However, the overall construction per capita illustrates the significant amount of development occurring within Halton on a comparative basis. Per capita, Halton ranked third after York and the City of Toronto in total building permit value in the GTHA in 2021, reaching $4,000 per capita, which was eight per cent of the market share (Source: Halton Region Economic Review 2021).

Halton is committed to delivering high-quality and resilient infrastructure that residents and businesses can rely on. This commitment to our growing community helps attract new businesses, supports business expansion, and keeps Halton a premier location for investment. In December 2021, Halton Regional Council approved the 2022 Budget and Business Plan. The Plan estimates that the Region will spend $5.7 billion over the next 10 years (2022-2031) on our capital plan, including $3.3 billion on growth-related infrastructure. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Water and wastewater infrastructure: $1.2 billion to fund projects such as water and wastewater services for new developments. The State-of-Good-Repair program has a budget of $1.4 billion.
  • Transportation infrastructure: $2.6 billion to support Regional transportation projects such as road widening; new roads; grade separation; and road resurfacing.
