Nomination Period
|
Nominations for the office of Regional Chair may be filed in person or by an agent at the Regional Clerk’s Office, Halton Regional Centre, Level 3, 1151 Bronte Road, Oakville view map (external link), Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding statutory holidays, from Monday, May 2, 2022 to Thursday, August 18, 2022. Due to construction at the Halton Regional Centre facility, an alternate location for filing may be designated by the Regional Clerk.
On Nomination Day (Friday, August 19, 2022), nominations may only be filed between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
COVID-19 protocols may apply for any in-person interactions. Further information will be provided closer to the nomination period.

Campaign Period
|
The campaign period for each candidate begins on the day the candidate files a nomination paper and ends on January 3, 2023, unless the nomination is withdrawn, the Regional Clerk rejects the nomination or the candidate is continuing their campaign to erase a deficit.

|

Withdrawal of Nominations
|
Last day for withdrawing a nomination. Withdrawal of Nomination forms must be filed before 2 p.m.

Election Signs
|
Candidates should check with their Local Municipality regarding the erection of election signs. Halton Region’s By-law 36-01 (PDF file) (consolidated) prohibits election signs on Regional road rights-of-way.

The Regional Clerk will examine nomination papers for certification or rejection before 4 p.m.

Acclamations
|
If after 4 p.m. there is only one certified candidate for the office of Regional Chair, the Regional Clerk shall declare the candidate to be duly elected.

Filing of/Withdrawal of Additional Nominations
|
If no nominations have been filed for the office of Regional Chair as of Friday, August 19, additional nominations may be filed between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
A candidate who wishes to withdraw their additional nomination must notify the Clerk in writing by 2 p.m.

Certification of Additional Nominations
|
Any additional nominations are to be examined and certified by 4 p.m.
If there is an acclamation, the candidate is to be declared elected by acclamation.

Last day for the Regional Clerk to provide a certificate of maximum campaign expense limit to all candidates.

|
As soon as possible after Election Day, the Regional Clerk will publicly declare the candidate with the highest number of votes to be elected for the position of Regional Chair.

|
Elected members must take the oath of office prior to taking their seat.

End of Campaign Period
|
This is the end of the campaign period unless the candidate withdraws their nomination, the nomination is rejected by the Regional Clerk or the candidate is continuing the campaign to erase a deficit. Candidates may not raise funds or incur expenses beyond this date unless they have a deficit and have notified the Regional Clerk in writing of the extension to the campaign period.

Notification to the Regional Clerk of a Deficit and Continuation of Campaign Period
|
If a candidate has a deficit on this date and wishes to continue campaigning to eliminate the deficit, the candidate must submit the Notice of Extension of Campaign Period to the Regional Clerk in person on or before 4:30 p.m., January 3, 2023. Failure to do so will mean that the campaign period automatically ends on this date.

Last day to apply for extension for filing of financial statements
|
A candidate may apply to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to extend the time to file the financial statement for the campaign period ending Jan. 3, 2023. The court may grant an extension of no more than 90 days. The Clerk must be advised of the court application prior to 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, 2023.

Deadline for filing of financial statements
|
Candidates must file their financial statements with the Regional Clerk no later than 2 p.m. This deadline is firm. If an application has been made to the Court for an extension, the Clerk must be notified by 2 p.m.
