Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan

Breadcrumbs

Halton Region reports our carbon emissions and how much energy we use to the Provincial Government each year.

About the Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan

Starting in 2014, we have released reports every five years that outline the steps we are taking to save energy, reduce carbon emissions and manage demand. This helps us comply with O. Reg. 25/23: Broader Public Sector: Energy Reporting and Conservation and Demand Management Plans (external link). The Region is also committed to updating the plan as new information becomes available through our ongoing Net-Zero work (PDF file).

Between 2019 and 2023, Halton Region has
  • Reduced energy consumption by six per cent.
  • Reduced carbon emissions by over 837 tonnes.
  • Saved about $606,151 in total energy costs.
We achieved this by
  • Reducing hydro and heating use across all corporate buildings by 13 per cent
  • Reducing hydro use of streetlights by nine per cent
  • Reducing carbon emissions by four per cent in Corporate Services
  • Reducing hydro use per MegaLitre of water treated by four per cent
  • Reducing hydro use per MegaLitre of wastewater treated by one per cent

2024 Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan

In July 2024, we released our 2024-2028 Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan (PDF file). The plan introduces new targets and actions to help us do even more.

Between 2024 and 2028, we will work to:

  • Use solar power to help reduce the annual energy use of water and wastewater treatment plants by two per cent.
  • Use a micro-hydro turbine to reduce annual energy use at the Mid-Halton wastewater treatment plant by three per cent.
  • Reduce hydro use of streetlights on Regional roads by four per cent;
  • Reduce the heat and hydro use per square foot of corporate facilities by six per cent; and
  • Reduce Halton Community Housing Corporation’s collective carbon emissions by 25 per cent.

The Region’s corporate-wide approach to energy management aligns with the 2023-2026 Strategic Business Plan (PDF file) and the Corporate Climate Action Plan (PDF file).
