Subsidized Passes for Low Income Transit (SPLIT)

SPLIT helps with public transit costs for low income residents in Burlington, Milton and Oakville, and ActiVan tickets and taxi scrip dollars in Halton Hills.

 

About the SPLIT program

The SPLIT program offers a subsidy to eligible Halton residents with low incomes to cover part of their local travel expenses.

Subsidies can be applied towards purchasing bus tickets or monthly bus passes from Burlington Transit, Oakville Transit or Milton Transit. In Halton Hills, subsidies can be applied towards ActiVan or the Taxi Scrip Program.

 

Eligibility

The following individuals may qualify for the SPLIT program:

If you qualify, you will be eligible for one year. After one year, you need to re-apply to maintain eligibility.

You can check your eligibility using the online application tool (external link). Checking your eligibility does not require an account. 

 

Application requirements

Information

To submit an application, you need your:

  • date of birth (and the date of birth for others listed in the application);
  • telephone number; and
  • current address.

Documentation

You will also need to upload documents to verify reported information, such as:

  • proof of address (for example: driver’s license, utility bill, other bills or mail addressed to you);
  • proof of income (usually your most recent Notice of Assessment); and
  • date of birth and proof of status in Canada (for example: Canadian birth certificate, passport, Record of Landing or other immigration status documents (external link))
 

For proof of income, you will need a Notice of Assessment (NOA) for all adult members of your household. These documents are provided by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA). For more information about this document and/or filing your taxes, visit the CRA website:

Proof of address, income, date of birth and status in Canada must be received within 10 business days of submitting your application. Applications with missing documentation are considered incomplete and will be closed after 10 business days. If you will not be able to submit the documents within 10 business days, please apply when your documents are ready.

You can upload related documents through the online application tool (external link), mail them to Halton Regional Centre (1151 Bronte Road, Oakville (Google Map)) or deliver them in-person.

 

Apply and manage your submission

To apply, create an account to use our online application tool (external link) or call 311. Your SPLIT application may take up to 15 minutes to complete, depending on your eligibility and availability of supporting documents. New and returning clients can use our new online tool to:

  • submit an application (including re-applications for active clients)
  • check the status of an application
  • upload supporting documents
  • contact Halton Region for support 

Once you have created an account an submitted an application, you can log in anytime to check the status of your submission or attach documents online.

 

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

  • Staff will contact you and advise whether you need to provide any additional information.
  • Once all of your information is reviewed, staff will let you know if you qualify.
  • If you are approved for the SPLIT program, you will be eligible for one year. After one year, you will need to re-apply.

The SPLIT program is only for public transit (buses) as well as Handi-Van, Care-A-Van, ActiVan and the Taxi Scrip Program operated by the Town of Halton Hills. It does not include any other types of transportation (such as GO Transit, taxi services, ride-sharing services, etc.).

SPLIT users benefit from a transfer agreement, allowing them to travel into Hamilton or Peel Region using “transfers”. The trip must be completed within a two-hour period.
